Once scientists discovered diamonds were made of pure carbon in the late 18th century, they began exploring ways to manufacture synthetic diamonds. Production methods improved over the subsequent centuries, and the man-made sparklers became commercially available in the 1980s. Quality, price, and sustainability contribute to the popularity of lab-grown diamonds today.
These lab-created gemstones are chemically and physically identical to their mined counterparts —the origin is what sets the two apart. Natural diamonds start as carbon atoms deep in the earth’s mantle. Exposure to volcanic heat and intense pressure over billions of years causes the atoms to crystalize thus forming diamonds. To make lab-grown diamonds, these underground growing conditions are simulated in a controlled environment and typically takes about a month to complete the formation process.
Because lab-grown and mined diamonds share the same physical properties, both are at 10 on the Mohs Scale of hardness. Both are also graded on quality using the 4 C’s— color, clarity, cut, and carat—as guides. Place a lab-grown diamond next to its natural counterpart and it’s impossible to tell the difference with the naked eye.
Unlike natural diamonds, lab-grown varieties aren’t linked to unethical mining and distribution practices that violate human rights. When compared to mining for natural diamonds, fewer natural resources are used to create lab-grown varieties, which can help protect the environment and conserve energy. Because there are an infinite number of lab-grown diamonds that can be produced whereas natural diamonds are a finite resource, lab-grown diamonds cost far less than their natural counterparts.
