Cushion Cut Diamond Ratios: Lauren B Diamond Education
Click to Watch
By popular demand we bring you an eye-opening educational video all about Cushion Cut diamond ratios. To refresh your memory, ratio refers to how square, or long, a diamond appears and that number is achieved by dividing the millimeter length by the width e.g a 1.10:1 ratio would be a diamond that can measure 7.7mm long by 7mm wide. The higher the first number, the longer the diamond will appear. Read along below as you continue to watch the video-In the beginning we have prepared five cushion cut diamonds ranging from square to what we call 'super elongated' and everything in the middle. Watch to see what ratio each diamond is and how we would name it. Choosing which cushion cut shape is right for you is all a matter of preference. An elongated cushion cut diamond is not better than a square per se, but maybe it suits your hand better or the style of ring you are interested in. Now keep watching to compare the perfectly square cushion against each of the other four types so you can get a better feel for how each one looks. In order of appearance:
-
In the first example we have the square cushion up against what we call an 'In-Between' diamond. With a ratio of 1.05:1 it is not quite square and not tall enough to be considered elongated. In most cases this 'In-Between' stone will look more square
-
Next is right around where the diamond starts to look noticeably elongated at a ratio of 1.10:1. At this point you can clearly see that it has more length and this kind of ratio is more common than the even longer ones that will follow it
-
Following that is a 1.15:1 ratio cushion cut diamond which can be categorized as 'Very Elongated'. This is also a great option for someone who wants to have length in their stone
-
Finally we have a 'Super Elongated' cushion with a ratio of 1.23:1. Anytime you go over the 1.15:1 ratio, it becomes more difficult to find ones that are cut well. At this kind of ratio it starts to have the appearance of an #ovaldiamond and may also lose its cushion cut appeal.
