Non-Traditional Engagement Rings

Your engagement ring says a lot about who you are as a person: it’s a symbol of love that can be personalized to fit every personality and style. If you’re looking for something that sets you apart, keep reading for some non-traditional ring inspo!

Diamond Duos

Why would anyone want to stick with one diamond when you can have two?! Diamond duo rings have picked up in popularity following the high-profile engagement of Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly. However, diamond duo rings have been around for centuries with the first notable duo ring being that of Empress Josephine of France.

Diamond duo rings are a great choice for those who can’t decide on one shape for their engagement ring and want an abundance of sparkle! Which shapes will you choose? The options are truly endless!

Color Center Stone

Colorless diamonds are the most classic option for an engagement ring… but that’s not what you came to this blog to read about! If you’re looking to add some color to your engagement ring, there are truly endless amounts of gemstones to choose from.

The most classic gemstone option people opt for in place of a diamond is a sapphire. The rich blue hue is a bold color option that is also, somehow, neutral. Scoring a 9 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, a sapphire is also a wise option as it sits just below diamond and will stand the test of time. This goes for rubies as well! To learn more about color gemstones, read our blog Everything You Need to Know About Color Gemstones.

Another option is investing in a fancy color diamond. Depending on the color and intensity of said color, the price tag can be quite hefty. However, there are lab-grown color diamonds that are much more reasonable in price. The three most popular fancy colors are yellow, pink, and blue. If you want to learn more about color diamonds, check out our Introduction to Fancy Color Diamonds blog.

Disclaimer: if you plan on wearing your engagement ring daily, we recommend choosing a gemstone that measures an 8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.

Rose Gold Rings

As far as metal colors go, rose gold isn’t as traditional as yellow gold or platinum for an engagement ring. Nevertheless, rose gold is by far the most romantic of the metal options.

Rose gold is the most durable gold metal, though it is still prone to tarnish and corrosion over time. As with yellow gold, rose gold has the ability to hide diamond color, which allows for a lower color grade center stone while maintaining a colorless appearance. Additionally, if your skin has rosy undertones, rose gold is a great option as it will bring out that beautiful blush color!

For an ultra-romantic look, consider a heart-shaped diamond; nothing stands out more than unique diamond shapes!

East-West Rings

Rings that are set east-west are rings where the center stone is set sideways as opposed to the traditional north-south (right side up). East-west settings are great for maximizing finger coverage.

The most common shapes for east-west rings are elongated shapes like emeralds and ovals. While non-traditional, east-west rings aren’t unpopular. Celebrities like Portia de Rossi and Catherine Zeta-Jones both have east-west marquise engagement rings!

Bezel Set Rings

Bezel set engagement rings can mean a lot of different things: it can mean a bezel set band, a bezel set center stone, or a bezel set wrap. Whichever way you cut it, bezel settings are very unique.

Bezels can be any shape to match that of the center-stone they are encasing. Oftentimes you will find milgrain etching around the bezel to give it a vintage appearance. Bezel settings help to protect the diamond by confining it within a secure metal setting, so incidental contact is less likely to loosen or dislodge a stone. A bezel setting also adds a clean, sleek look to diamonds and gemstones of various shapes and sizes, making them extremely versatile for everyday use.

Bezel Set Bands

Engagement rings with bezel set bands are very intricately designed; instead of the diamonds on the band being pavé set, each diamond is encased in a delicate metal edge that holds it into place. Bezel set bands add much more detail to the traditional pavé engagement ring.

Bezel Set Center Stones

Bezel set center stones are a different ballgame–instead of the small diamonds being encased in metal down the band, the center stone is completely entrapped in metal to secure it in place. As stated above, bezel set rings are the most secure setting as it protects the center stone from any potential damage from daily wear.

If you’re looking for more sparkle, you can opt for a bezel set three-stone engagement ring. In this case, the center stone and side stones are all encompassed by a thin band of metal, holding them in place.

Bezel Set Wraps

If you want a more classic ring with just a *hint* of something non-traditional, consider a simple bezel wrap! Instead of the bezel detailing being the main focus of your engagement ring, it’s a subtle difference that immediately sets you apart from most.
