All About Trapezoid Side Stones: Lauren B Threestone Engagement Ring Series

Three stone rings are a true classic and very traditional. For some people it is the first thing that comes to mind when they think of a traditional engagement ring. The main component is that they feature one main center stone with two stones on the sides. There are tons of variations of these designs and many side stone options to choose from.  In today's video we want to go into some detail on trapezoid side stones in particular

To start, what is a trapezoid? Trapezoid side stones, have 1 pair of opposite sides that are parallel

So who would consider side trapezoids? It is great for someone wanting to create a fuller appearance on the hand. Trapezoids tend to have large surface areas and give a nice amount of finger coverage. Because trapezoids have straight edges you would see it paired with square and rectangular diamond shapes. Some examples would be emerald, asscher, radiant, cushion, and princess cut.

Now trapezoids come in two major variations. The first is option is brilliant cut and the second option is step cut

Brilliant Cut vs. Step Cut Trapezoids

Brilliant cut trapezoids have a crushed ice appearance to them meaning they have many small sparkles coming from within the stone. Step cut trapezoids have more open faceting and appear as if you can see through the stone. Essentially there is a very linear and geometric appearance to the faceting because they are lined up almost like a staircase

So which type of trapezoid works for you? Well it depends on what cut your center stone is. If you have a brilliant cut center diamond you would want to pair that center with brilliant cut trapezoids. If you have a step cut center stone you would want to pair it with step cut trapezoids

Take a look at this ring featuring a 2.7 carat radiant center and trapezoid side stones. We see the faceting in the radiant cut center diamond matches the faceting on the side traps. Also notice how these trapezoids taper to meet the band.

Elongated vs. Wider Trapezoids

On this next ring we have a 3 carat emerald cut center diamond with very elongated step cut trapezoids. The length on these trapezoid side stones almost matches up to the length of the diamond and there is less of a tapering effect.

Of course you can opt for a step cut center diamond like this asscher cut and pair it with more tapered and square step cut side trapezoids as well.

Note: You always want to match the quality, especially color, of your center stone with the quality of the side stones. This way there are no discrepencies or differences that can be visible to the naked eye. Overall there should be a nice flow from the center to the sides.

We specialize in custom creating engagement rings and can help select the perfect side stones for the center! These rings can also be made using moissanite and color stones as well!
